Migrating from Qlik Sense to Power BI

Our Client

  • Founded in 2015,Our client is a leading manufacturer of industrial equipment, Renowned for its commitment to excellence and trust.

  • The firm has successfully managed and further expanding its reach and influence with operations in over 50 countries.

Problem Statement

  • Our client uses Qlik Sense as their main business intelligence tool, with hundreds of dashboards and reports covering various aspects of their business, such as sales, production, inventory, quality, and finance.
  • Our client decided to migrate their Qlik Sense dashboards and reports to Power BI, as part of their strategic initiative to leverage the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and its services. Our client wanted to take advantage of the scalability, security, and integration capabilities of Power BI, as well as its lower total cost of ownership compared to Qlik Sense.

Challenges

  • The Qlik Sense data model and expressions were complex and customized, and required a thorough analysis and translation to Power BI.

  • The Qlik Sense dashboards and reports had many features and functionalities that were not available or different in Power BI, such as set analysis, alternate states, master items, and extensions.

  • The Qlik Sense dashboards and reports had to be recreated in Power BI with the same or better look and feel, performance, and user experience.

  • The Qlik Sense data sources were diverse and heterogeneous, and included SQL Server, Oracle, SAP, Excel, CSV, and web services.

Our Solution

Assessment: The existing Qlik Sense data models, dashboards, and reports were assessed and documented, along with their data sources, expressions, features, and functionalities.

Data Preparation: The data sources were consolidated and optimized, and the data models were redesigned and normalized, using Power Query and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). The data models were deployed to Azure SQL Database and Azure Analysis Services, and refreshed using Azure Data Factory.

Report Development: The dashboards and reports were recreated in Power BI Desktop, using the best practices and standards for Power BI development.  The dashboards and reports were tested and validated for accuracy, performance, and usability.

Report Deployment: The dashboards and reports were published to Power BI Service, and organized into workspaces and apps. The security and access control were configured using Azure Active Directory and Power BI roles.

User Adoption: The business users were trained and supported on how to use and interact with the Power BI dashboards and reports. The feedback and issues were collected and resolved, and the enhancements and changes were implemented.

Business Impact

  • Our client was able to leverage the power and flexibility of the Azure cloud platform and its services, and reduce their dependency on on-premises infrastructure and maintenance.

  • Our client was able to reduce their licensing and operational costs by switching from Qlik Sense to Power BI, and achieve a faster return on investment.

  • Our client was able to improve their data quality, consistency, and governance, by using a centralized and standardized data model and data source.

  • Our client was able to enhance their business intelligence capabilities, by using the advanced features and functionalities of Power BI, such as AI, natural language, and mobile access.

  • Our client was able to increase their user satisfaction and adoption, by providing them with a modern, intuitive, and interactive user interface and experience.
