Oracle PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric: Finance, HCM and Campus Solutions Reporting Dashboards
PeopleSoft data reaches OneLake through Oracle mirroring or pipelines and feeds Power BI reporting dashboards for Finance, HCM and Campus Solutions.
PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric is the step many universities, public bodies and large employers take when their PeopleSoft system is stable and trusted, but reporting from it is slow, technical and hard to share. Fabric gives Finance, HCM and Campus Solutions data one governed home, so leaders get reporting dashboards without asking for another custom query or export.
This guide is for finance, HR, student services and IT leaders running Oracle PeopleSoft. It explains where reporting gets stuck, the realistic ways to land PeopleSoft data in Fabric, how effective dating and SetIDs affect the model, and what to build first.
Why PeopleSoft Reporting Holds Teams Back
PeopleSoft is built for transactions and control, and it does that well. Reporting is a different job. Answers often depend on PeopleSoft Query, custom SQR or nVision reports and a few people who know the record structures. Requests queue up, definitions drift between departments, and the same headcount or enrollment figure appears in three versions.
Reporting dashboards become dependable only when the data is brought together, shaped for analysis and defined once. That is a platform decision, not another report to write.
Finance, HCM and Campus Solutions: What You Are Reporting On
Most estates report across three areas. Finance covers the general ledger, payables, receivables, assets and budgets. HCM covers employees, jobs, positions, payroll and absence. Campus Solutions covers students, admissions, enrollment, courses and financial aid. Each has its own tables, owners and sensitivity, so plan them as separate subject areas that share common dimensions such as calendar, department and organization.
PeopleSoft runs on a relational database, and Oracle is a common choice, though other platforms are supported. Confirm yours first, because it decides which Fabric paths are open. The rest of this guide assumes Oracle.
Why PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric Works for Reporting Dashboards
Fabric combines OneLake storage, pipelines, notebooks, a warehouse and Power BI on one capacity. Once PeopleSoft data is in OneLake it can be joined with CRM, survey, timetable or workforce-planning data, cleaned once and served through a governed semantic model. Reporting load also moves off the transactional system, which protects processing windows such as payroll and registration.
Our Power BI consulting team builds these models. If you run other Oracle applications too, see how we approach Oracle E-Business Suite and JD Edwards data.
PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric: Mirroring, Pipelines and Extracts
The right path depends on how fresh the data must be, where the database runs and how much of it you need. Organizations often combine them.
| Path | When it fits | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle database mirroring | You want near real-time replication into OneLake with little ETL | Supported environment, LogMiner, archive logging, gateway, 1,000-table limit |
| Pipelines or Dataflows Gen2 | You need scheduled loads and transformation as data lands | Gateway, load window, incremental keys, database load |
| Scheduled extracts to files | Reporting already depends on exports or a warehouse feed | Reuse before rebuilding, ownership, reconciliation |
| Power BI directly on the database | One small, low-risk report | Query load, effective-date logic, row security |
Microsoft documents Oracle mirroring for Oracle version 10 and above with LogMiner enabled, on on-premises or Azure VMs, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Oracle Database@Azure and Exadata. It needs archive log mode, supplemental logging, a database in write mode and an on-premises data gateway. A mirrored database supports up to 1,000 tables, and tables with no primary key or unique index are not supported. PeopleSoft has thousands of tables, so select only the records each subject area needs. Check current status and limits before relying on it.
Replication compute is free, and storage is free up to a limit based on capacity size, while queries use capacity. Our Microsoft Fabric migration approach and migration checklist show how this fits a wider platform plan.
- PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric gives Finance, HCM and Campus Solutions data one governed home for reporting dashboards.
- Oracle mirroring is one option, with documented requirements and a 1,000-table limit, so select records by subject area.
- Effective dates and SetIDs must be handled in the model, or reports will show history or mix business units.
- Keep a raw layer, a shaped layer and one set of measures so numbers reconcile to PeopleSoft.
- Start with one subject area and one dashboard that the data owner signs off.
Effective Dates, SetIDs and Records: Modeling PeopleSoft for Reporting
Most reporting errors come from how PeopleSoft stores data, not from the move itself. Application tables are physically named with a PS_ prefix, so extracts and models work from those names. Many tables are effective dated, using EFFDT, EFF_STATUS and sometimes EFFSEQ, and only one row is current. A model that ignores this returns history and future rows alongside the current one and inflates counts.
Control tables can also be shared through TableSets using a SETID, so a report that joins them without a SetID condition can mix values from different business units. Build the as-of logic and SetID mapping once in the shaped layer, so every dashboard inherits it. Reconcile totals back to PeopleSoft reports during the first cycles so owners trust the figures.
Security, Sensitive Data and Reporting Governance
PeopleSoft holds personal, payroll and student records, so governance matters from day one. Decide who may see each subject area, use row-level and column-level security where audiences differ, and mask sensitive fields for non-admins. Microsoft documents row-level security, column-level security and dynamic data masking for mirrored Oracle data in Fabric.

Our data governance consulting work and the Power BI Governance Platform keep definitions consistent as more teams build on the same data. PeopleSoft to Microsoft Fabric: What to Build First
Start with the subject area leaders ask about most, such as a finance close pack, a headcount view or an enrollment dashboard. Choose the simplest path from the table, land the data in a lakehouse, handle effective dates and SetIDs in one shaped layer, and publish one semantic model and one reporting dashboard that the data owner signs off. Then add the next subject area.
